Frequently asked questions

What is the DTW Community About?

Steven Pressfield’s book, “Do the Work”, outlines how we are able to overcome the resistance and ship our work. We believe that his model for shipping creative work (businesses, projects, novels, plays, art, etc) is one to try to emulate. Since we don’t have Mr. Pressfield in our pocket, this community will have to do.

Also, we’ve had a lot of success with using the system outlined in DTW and we feel our community can help spread that message.

Do I have to read Do the Work to join?

Yes. If you haven’t yet read the book then stop reading this FAQ and get that done. The community members will often reference the book. Read the book and take action on your project.

Okay, What does the community do for me?

The community focuses on providing you with an environment in which you can do the work and find assistance and accountability for shipping your work. We do this through a number of ways.

The first is that your projects show up on the projects list of the website. This list provides the accountability. Here you will post updates to your post and continue to get feedback, accountability and encouragement from other workers in the community.

The other is through the community forum. The forum is where you find the assistance you need in battling the resistance.

Each member of DTW Community will get a username and login so they can write about their project on the DTW Community site. We’ll have weekly or bi-weekly calls or webinars (yet to be decided) to talk about our projects, the resistance and our progress. You can use the site to give updates on your project and partner with other people doing the work.

How Do I Get Started?

The first step in getting started is to fill out an application. Once you’ve applied you’ll soon find out if you’ve been accepted.

Once accepted into the community, you can then use The Guide to creating the “one-sheet” to help map out your project from start to finish.

How does the project updating work again?

The community provides you with a space to write about the work you’re doing on your project.

Each week you are expected to update the community about your progress via a blog post. The community will then respond with encouragement, accountability, and feedback.

What is expected of me in the community?

Most importantly is that you do the work. As long as you do the work, you’ll be allowed to stay.

Aside from that you can help the community by spreading the DTW message, answer questions and lending assistance and encouragement where possible.

What’s the monthly book drive?

We want to help others break out of the mundane and “Do the Work”. Because of this we encourage you to give away copies of the book. The monthly book drive is our combined effort to spread the message of “Do the Work”.

What we don’t do

Do The Work Community provides encouragement and accountability. We gather as a group to provide assistance which is the only way to beat the resistance. We do not pretend to be all-knowing experts in any area of business, web development, social media strategy, branding, marketing etc. Many of our community members DO have those skills so this is a great place to connect with them and ask for help off-line.
